about

Dating has always been challenging. Especially with the advent of dating apps and the general malaise that comes with getting older and more guarded.

Hope marks the era in which I recognized my dating habits and how, maybe, my penchant for leaping headlong into an exclusive partnership with one person after only having spent a handful of hours with them, might not have been the most effective strategy.

I wish I had understood the benefits of spending so many hours with my peers in high school and college at the time. This allowed us to let our connections form genuinely over time, without the pretext of "dating" until we could decide to define it as that for ourselves when we were ready to.

Alas, this is the way that folks my age go about it. The pretext is built into the algorithm.

Hope binds me to the idea that I can take my time, hit the breaks on revealing every corner of myself right away, and be truly present for the person sitting opposite me as they reveal themselves to me in their own time.

I hope that one day, the magic of connection will happen for me in that old-fashioned way it once did. I think I still have time.

lyrics

I had a little wine
and then I took a little time
to tell you
how I feel about you
when you quickly looked away
I knew you didn't feel the same
though I thought
that it was real

But I've been wrong before
thought I'd never see the porch side of the door
and I've belonged before
Now I'm waiting I'm just waiting for
that feeling to repeat
but I don't know which words to listen for
or who's face I'm supposed to see

But I know
what I'm here for
and I know what I'm supposed to do

I just hope
that you see it
too

I spend a lot of days
just trying to make my way
through the time
I had to spend
And when I found myself some joy
I'd be discovered by a boy
looking for
some joy to bend his way

But I've been down that way before
It's never led me anywhere there's more
so I tip my hat and say
Now I am waiting I just wait
to see some joy that you have made
I wanna see what pumps your heart for you
and how you spend your days

But I know
what I'm here for and I know what I'm supposed to do
I just hope
you know what that is for you
