Let Me
02:44
|
|||
Let Me
If I could right all of her wrongs
I would undo all that she did
But you would still look at me sideways
And her apology is not mine to give
If you could only hear me say “I love you”
The way I mean it to be heard
Then we could finally lean against each other
And never say another painful word
Cause I’m a mess when I am with you
And I’m a mess when I’m alone
But at least I am consistent
At least I know what I must own
So please be still
And please try to believe me
That I was put on earth to love you
And all you need to do is let me
All you need to do is let me
She loved you once as I did
I have no doubt her love was strong
but when she fell from her own graces
You thought it was you that she’d done wrong
Now I am scared that you will drop me
If I ever let go of myself
I hope that I can still be my own woman
After I’ve given you everything else
Cause I’m a mess when I am with you
And I’m a mess when I’m alone
But at least I am consistent
At least I know what I must own
So please be still
And please try to believe me
That I was put on earth to love you
And all you need to do is let me
All you need to do is let me

Seattle
04:01
|
|||
I have memories of midnight hot springs suds
float to me in my cold winter dreams.
And on that moon-less night when the stars were right,
and your eyes were turned to the sky.
I let you run toward the setting sun,
with the joy that you'd be home by dusk.
But you came back late to a cold dinner plate
with the news - it's our last night alone.
I'm reduced by one, but that one was fun -
and full of love that I never exclaimed.
I'm driving up to Seattle
to bring my boy back with me.
We're driving back from Seattle
eventually.
So now what I'm taught is that love ain't thought
but is free, beyond our control.
Well you know I brought all the love I got
in a sieve that leaked on the ground.
With my own two hands I will work this land,
bringing warmth and promise from below.
I'm a mud-soaked blight on this clear starry night,
'cause I can't see the drops for the rain.
So remembering you is all I can do
to believe that I will love again.
I'm driving up to Seattle
to bring my boy back with me.
We're driving back from Seattle
eventually.
So for now I rhyme just to bide the time
'till I see that you're looking for me.
I'll write "sad to hear", and I'll lend an ear
for a fee - come to the hot springs again.
I'm driving up to Seattle
to bring my boy back with me.
We're driving back from Seattle
eventually.

Bottle & Bowl
02:36
|
|||
A bottle of Bulleit
And a bowl of rice
Never drank so warm
Never bit so nice
I think of you whenever I am in this place
With a bottle of Bulleit
And a bowl of rice
The senoritas are folkloring outside
I want so much to join them
But my rhythm ain’t right
I’ve I could only barter one song of light
For a bottle of Bulleit and a bowl of rice
We came through here just you and me
In the back of a pickup without windows to see
We held each other through the blackest pitch
They sent you back and left me naked in a ditch.
Oh God help you
If you come a-lookin’ for me
I’ll be sittin’ right here
But you will not see
I’ll be crying for you through my sightless eyes
Into my bottle of Bulleit
And my bowl of rice
Into my bottle of Bulleit
And my bowl of rice

Send Me An Angel
03:23
|
|||
Do you believe in Heaven above?
Do you believe in love?
Don't tell a lie, don't be false or untrue
It all comes back to you
Open fire, on my burning heart
I've never been lucky in love
My defenses are down
A kiss or a frown
I can't survive on my own
If a boy walks in and draws her name in my heart
I'll turn and run away
Everyday we've all been led astray
It's hard to be lucky in love
It gets in your eyes, it's making you cry
Don't know what to do, don't know what to do
You're looking for love
Calling Heaven above
Send me an angel
Send me an angel
Right now, right now
Send me an angel
Send me an angel
Right now, right now
Empty dreams can only disappoint
In a room behind your smile
But don't give up, don't give up
You can be lucky in love
It gets in your eyes, it's making you cry
Don't know what to do, don't know what to do
You're looking for love
Calling heaven above
Send me an angel
Send me an angel
Right now, right now
Send me an angel
Send me an angel
Right now, right now

Second Place
03:47
|
|||
I leave my home way too late,
stay longer than I ever should have stayed.
I worry that I missed my flight,
but as it happens if was just delayed
See I’m a lonely home girl,
thought that I deserved of nothing more.
But as I leave I hope I’m wrong -
Is there everything or nothing else in store?
You meet me at the airport
just like a childhood friend you don’t forget.
This strikes me as unusual
cause you and I have never even met
I wonder how you know me
and you tell your story of a little bird
I have no baggage with me so I carry yours,
now isn’t that absurd?
I listen to your dreams and I tell you most of mine I can recall
But there’s a dream you haven’t heard,
the only I thinks the most revealing of them all
In you I see a traveler,
you have been around the world and back again.
I say our roads are different,
you say all our roads are pretty much the same
While you revisit childhood
I leave behind my own and start anew
This is how our ages cross
and why I mind the difference a little less than you
I listen to your dreams and I tell you most of mine I can recall
But there’s a dream you haven’t heard,
the only I thinks the most revealing of them all
See in it there’s a boy about your height
and dare I say, roughly your weight
He looks just like you don’t ask me how I know
I’ve never even seen his face
Each time the place is different
from the shopping malls to windless sails on the lake.
But no matter where we are
that’s not the point that I am trying to make.
I listen to your dreams and I tell you most of mine I can recall
But there’s a dream you haven’t heard,
the only I thinks the most revealing of them all
See this boy he’s just a dream
and as I say, I don’t think dreams are true
But you met me at the airport and I figured out just then
that boy is you.
So now that we have met,
I hope we never go our separate ways.
And even if we do I have my dreams,
and that’s not bad for second place.

Two Fools
04:16
|
|||
From the dark side of the window
Stands a man of time and wear
Singing sweet songs to the willow
Oh but she don’t seem to care
He is often at that window
With a cool glass in his hand
Taking long pulls between verses
As he accompanies her dance
How can two fools fall in love
How can two fools have the chance
When one fool is a dancer
And one is playing with the band
From the dark side of the garden
Sways a willow tall and round
Making circles with her branches
To a ghostly singin sound
Between this lady long and rooted
And this moment of a man
Lies a love that’s leashed and languid
And a dance they’ll never have
How can two fools fall in love
How can two fools have the chance
When one fool is a dancer
And one is playing with the band

To Mom
05:22
|
|||
Always seem to find myself on top of a mountain, dreaming of the sea.
When I get to the ocean, I miss the mountains and the evergreens.
No number of steel foundations could relieve me of my need
for all of these
So I’ll spend my days
making my way
from one to the other.
To show my love for my mother,
there is only her
there is no other.
So pack your bags,
don’t forget your flags,
remember where you came from.
Hold on tight,
never lose sight of all the battles you’ve lost
Hope against hope
that that’s not the last time you’ll stand in a rainstorm.
You’ve only one chance to get it all back,
no matter the cost.
Twelve hour plane ride, 20 tons of fuel, a talk with an old friend.
The flight was horrendous but god it feels good to see you again.
Mother sends her love, gave up her very own blood so I could see you again.
So let’s crawl back on our knees,
feed our breath to the trees.
Let us love her back, then.
One more well on a hill.
One more gulf war or spill.
One more tick on the clock.
One more sedentary man.
One more dead music program.
One more cell on the block.
Mama’s cryin again for all her derelict children,
what a disappointment we’ve been.
Mama’s cryin again for all her derelict children,
what a disappointment we’ve been.
You’ve only this chance.
Only this chance.
Only this.

Good Night
03:32
|
|||
Woke up one morning in New Orleans
With a pain in my head and
Whiskey on my jeans
But it’s alright
It means I had a good night
I said it’s alright it means I had me a real good night
Woke up one morning in Chico State
With smoke in my hair and a big smile on my face
But it’s alright
It means I had a good night
I said it’s alright it means I had me a real good night
Woke up one morning in a strange man’s bed
I wasn’t wearing my clothes I was wearing his instead
But it’s alright
It means I had a good night
I said it’s alright it means I had me a real good night
Woke up one morning in New Orleans
With a pain in my head and
Whiskey on my jeans
But it’s alright
It means I had a good night
I said it’s alright it means I had me a real good night

Imagine
03:54
|
|||
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

If You Only Knew
03:11
|
|||
I could love you I really could
I could show you how good you could have it
I would give you the whole wide world
If you only knew
If you only knew
I would give you the sun and moon
Look I have them right here in my pocket
And I would hand them right over to you
If you only knew
If you only knew
My inner cynic is giving my inner romantic the evil eye
I used to be so good at this, now I choke each time I try
And you are too close for comfort
And I am to bold to hide
So here’s the door
When you’re ready to come inside
I could tell you I really could
If I could say the words to form this confession
But this ol heart of mine has a tether on my tongue
If you only knew
If you only knew.
That I could love you I really could
If I could give myself permission to do it
Maybe I’ll continue just to love you as I do
If you only knew
If you only knew

Knockin'
05:07
|
|||
If you come a knockin’,
honey I don’t mind
but if you’re not here for loving
well baby don’t waste my time.
There’s chicken in the fridge,
half a bottle of wine,
sit and eat your fill
and give me what is mine.
Chicken in the fridge,
half a bottle of wine,
sit and eat your fill
and gimme gimme gimme gimme .
Show me the money,
show me the money,
show me the money
and the milk and the honey.
I was watching your lips as we were walking you were talking.
I wasn’t listening but watching your lips.
I was watching your lips while we were walking you were talking.
I wasn’t listening but watching your lips.
Down to the corner store and right back up the stairs
Down to the corner store and right back up the stairs

I'm Coming Home
03:24
|
|||
There are so many years between us
At least three thousand miles by bus
I know I’ve no right to just show up
But it’s California or bust.
I hope you’re not angry
Cause I don’t mean to make you mad
I hope you’re at peace
I hope you’re alone
Cause I’m coming home
I know that I gave no reason
I just came and left with the season
To you it must have felt like treason
So I hope this news I bring is pleasing
I hope you’re not angry
Cause I don’t mean to make you mad
I hope you’re at peace
I hope you’re alone
Cause I’m coming home
I know it may have seemed like I could care less
But with you I am happiest
I never claimed to be flawless
But to love you forever I will promise
I hope you’re not angry
Cause I don’t mean to make you mad
I hope you’re at peace
I hope you’re alone
Cause I’m coming home
I hope you’re at peace
I hope you’re alone
Cause I’m coming home
